"Is That All There Is?"

In 1998 singer Peggy Lee recorded Is That All There Is?  Despite its rather mournful theme, the song became an overnight sensation.  It was as if she had finally asked the question that countless others had wondered about.  When the singing stops and the curtain comes down on our lives are we going to discover that is all there is?

As Christians we know there is more to our lives than the simple accumulation of the days and years we live on earth.  We know each one of us was created with special gifts that, when used properly, will continue to live and grow long after our lives are completed.  But the only way to discover and develop these gifts is to remain connected with God.  The best way to do that, of course, is through prayer.

As a matter of fact, prayer is so important that in I Thessalonians 5:16-18, Paul reminds us to Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstance.  But what does it mean to pray without ceasing?  Are we suppose to exclude all other activities in life so we can focus on this one thing?

The answer, of course, is “no.”  We are to live out of a sense of wonderment and blessing for all that God, through Christ, has done for us.  And while most of have lifted prayers of gratitude or those born more out of a sense of pain and disappointment, these occasional words are not enough to keep us connected to the One who provides our lives with meaning and hope.  But to do so, we must spend intentional time each and every day in prayer.  We must give thanks for all that has already been given to us while asking for guidance and direction in those things we are doing.

Once we have prayed, however, there is yet another step to take - listening to what God says in return.   Believe it, or not, God really does want to be in conversation with us!  And, oh, the wonderful things we can learn!
