"Don’t Worry!"

Several years ago the song, Don’t Worry, Be Happy, was sweeping across this country.  It was, in my opinion, one of the most obnoxious pieces of music ever composed!  Obviously, however, I was in the minority because week after week, month after month it continued to be played on radio stations and television shows.

While I still cringe every time the song is played, it now makes sense as to why it was so popular in a world where we have so much to worry about – careers and financial security; family members and close friends; world events and escalating violence.  Come to think of it, one of the things many of us worry about is worrying too much!  After all, worry and the anxiety it produces is bad for our health!

Jesus knew that excessive worry would eventually rob us of the joy God intended for us to experience during our time on earth.  That is why he told us not to waste time grieving over the past or worrying about the future.  We are, instead, to remember how much God cares for us and how much God is willing to do for us.  (See Matthew 6:25-34)

There will always be problems and concerns throughout our lives.  There will always be times when family members disappoint us and our friends turn against us.  And, yes, we need to pray for our world leaders and work towards the prevention of violence wherever it may be found.  But if we place our trust in God and allow faith to guide our thoughts and actions then the worries of this world will not overcome us.
