Give ear to my words, O LORD;

give heed to my sighing

Listen to the sound of my cry,

my King, and my God,

for to you I pray.

(Psalm 5:1-2)

We, like the psalmist who wrote these words thousands of years ago, know what it feels like to be overwhelmed by the trials and disappointments of life.  We understand why people become so desperate they cry out:  Don’t your care, Lord?  Why aren’t you helping me?  Won’t you answer me, please?

Despite what some may think, God actually expects us to cry out when our lives are filled with one disappointment after another.  We are encouraged to bring our anger, confusion, and fear to the Lord in prayer.  It is not wrong tell God exactly how we are feeling.

What is wrong, however, is that far too often we spout off, and then immediately turn away in place of waiting for God’s response.  After being honest about his feelings, the psalmist continued to focus his attention on God.  Because he did, he soon came to understand that God was bigger than his problems and his fears.  As a result, he went away knowing that his life was under God’s loving care.

So when your life gets tough, when it seems as though nothing is going right and no one really cares, cry out.  Let God know exactly how you are feeling.  Then, in the silence that follows, wait for God to respond.  Your cries have been heard and your prayers will be answered.
