THE CROSS ROAD
Volume One, Issue One January/February, 2010
A MISSION UPDATE
Seventeen youth and sponsors descended upon the Ronald McDonald House on Sunday, January 10, for our first mission experience of the year. A taco bar was prepared for parents who are staying at the house while they have children in the hospital. We are looking forward to going back in the spring and helping with outdoor chores.
We voted to contact the Washburn Campus Minister about the possibility of serving a monthly meal to students who participate in the Center’s activities. We will also be asking Lowman adults to pair up with us for a workday at the Campus Ministry house. More details about both events will be published as they become available.
We will also be collecting pill bottles, combs and disposable razors for Let’s Help. Mike will arrange a time for us to assemble the kits that are given to those who need them.

Lowman youth will be hosting a Shrove Tuesday Pancake feed on February 16th. This will be one of our major fundraisers for the year so we need all the youth to be involved. Proceeds from the event (minus our tithe to the church) will be used to help fund future activities and missions.
Everyone will have an opportunity to sign up for a time to work and to donate food items at the January 17th and 24th meetings. The first crew of workers will need to arrive at the church by 4:30 to help set up and start preparing the food. The last crew should be finished cleaning up no later than 7:30. |
WHAT IS LENT?
Lent is a season of renewal that begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter. Although we talk about the Forty Days of Lent, in actually the season is 46 days long because Sunday’s are considered “mini-Easters” and are excluded from the count.
The day before Lent begins is often referred to as “Shrove Tuesday” or “Mardi Gras” in French. In the ancient church people were encouraged to use up all the fat, cream and eggs in the house before Lent. That is why the tradition of eating pancakes on this particular day began!
While often think of Lent as a time to give up favorite foods and activities, it can also be seen as an opportunity to taken on additional activities such as devoting more time to prayer and bible study or assisting in a special volunteer project.
Whatever we decide to do during this holy season it should us renew and strengthen our faith. This can be a special time of growing closer to God by cutting eliminating some of the distractions that keep us from focusing on our faith.
