A Word From the Pastor
Dan Waters, Senior Pastor     The people have spoken! The Worship Committee has recommended!! The Church council has approved!!! And now Lowman United Methodist Church will begin a Contemporary Worship Service during the 10:45 hour starting January 4, 2004.
By a unanimous voice vote, the Church Council voted at the Sunday, October 9 meeting to accept the recommendation of the Worship Committee. The Worship Committee spent many hours surveying the congregation and holding discussion groups around the subject of contemporary worship. Several members visited other congregations in the area to learn more about variety in worship styles.
Some of the major factors involved in making the decision were:
·a perceived need for an alternative worship service on Sunday mornings;
·a desire to make our worship and congregation more attractive to younger people—both new prospects and also our own younger members
·a belief that younger persons would be unlikely to come at 8:30 a.m.
·a realization that some would probably change to a new worship time when the contemporary service was started, but a belief that making the 8:30 service the traditional worship service would result in fewer changes.

 Now, the next step is for Lowman UMC to form a Contemporary Worship Team. Anyone can volunteer to be on the team. Music and service planning will be done by the team, but that will not limit team membership only to those who are musically inclined. In the weeks to come, we will be developing the format and style of the contemporary worship service. The Team will answer the question, “Just what is meant by ‘contemporary’?
The 8:30 worship service will be “traditional.” We will sing more of the old, familiar hymns. We will have the Chancel Choir singing at the 8:30 service. The Worship Committee will help to plan the style and format of the traditional service. In this way we hope to offer something that everyone can find meaningful.
Currently, the plans are to have two different sermons at the two different services. That way, some people may choose to attend BOTH of the Sunday services. (There are currently no plans to change the Saturday service.)
Please be in prayer for your own worship decisions and those of the congregation. Let us see this change as an opportunity to grow in our faith, in our outreach, and in our numbers. I would be glad to dialogue with any of you about these changes.
Grace and Peace,
Dan Waters
