"The Traffic Jams of Life"
August 1, 2010

Dear Friends,

Wouldn't you know it, I had just learned where all the major potholes were and how best to avoid them on the daily commute to and from church when the city of Topeka decided to repair the street! Now, I remember all the angry letters to the editor and heated exchanges at City Council meetings concerning the sorry state of our city streets. So one would assume that those of us who were forced to dodge all those potholes would have been ecstatic the day all those orange cones appeared and the work began.

But that wasn't what happened! In place of rejoicing that something was finally being done to correct the problem, drivers were actually becoming angry. Some were attempting to drive around barriers despite the obvious presence of street crews and heavy equipment. Others used any available parking lot as their own personal freeways and yelled obscenities at anyone who happened to get in their way. It was as if this temporary inconvenience was actually an intentional scheme to make their lives miserable. Others, however, simply took it with a grain of salt. While sitting in all the extra traffic and trying to drive in the extremely narrow lanes that had been created with the help of those orange cones was not the way they would have chosen to spend their daily commutes, at least there was the promise of a safer street when all the work was finally completed. Both sets of drivers were faced with the same set of circumstances. But their choices on how to react were very different! So it is with life. While there will be those days that are filled with conflict, doubts, and disappointments, there will be countless others that provide us with opportunities to grow and enjoy ourselves. It is up to us as to how we will respond. Is it the end of the world when something bad happens or is it simply a fleeting moment in time?

How can we develop the right view of life? How can we be realistic without becoming embittered and angry? The answer is simple! Regardless of what is going on around us, we can look to Jesus. We can pattern our lives after his by incorporating his teachings into ours! Come to think about it, isn't that what the Christian life is all about?

See You in Church,
Pastor Kathleen
