A Word From the Pastor
Dan Waters, Senior Pastor February 1st will be the Super Bowl. Many people will be watching, not so much to see who wins the game, but to see the new commercials that will be unveiled during that broadcast. Once I even wrote down a description of each one and ranked my favorites. Millions of dollars will be expended on developing and broadcasting these commercials. Will it be worth it?

Advertising is designed to get people to do something or to buy something. We are into advertising here at Lowman UMC. We print brochures, make power point slides, write articles for newsletters, put ads in the newspaper, and most of all, give announcements before worship (which takes up a lot of time). This is so that people will sign up for our classes or come to our fund raisers.

The best advertising is still the cheapest. It is called “word of mouth”. When people know about something they really want to do, or have already been involved in something that meant a lot to them, they become the best advertisements. They tell people, “Come to Learning Ventures at Lowman” or “Come to “ALPHA.” We here at Lowman UMC are counting on you, the members, to do this kind of “word of mouth” advertising.

But the larger issue is even more important. Even more important than our activities and classes at the church is the opportunity we each have to do “word of mouth” advertising for Jesus Christ. (We call this “evangelism” or “faith sharing”). Sharing what God has done in our lives is easy. We don’t have to memorize Bible verses or learn to debate in order to do this. And Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would help give us the words most appropriate to use in our “word of mouth” endeavors.

So come enroll in the “Learning Ventures at Lowman.” Come enroll in ALPHA. And bring someone with you. We will all be blessed if you do.

Grace and Peace,
Dan Waters
